Spiegel Lays Off Another 90 Workers

Spiegel Group

subsidiary Distribution Fulfillment Services last week laid off more than 90 workers at its two distribution centers in central Ohio. About 1,100 workers remain at the locations, which house merchandise for Downers Grove, IL-based Spiegel and its Eddie Bauer division.

Spiegel, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 17, blamed the layoffs on declining sales and unpaid credit-card debt. “We will continue to adjust our workforce in conjunction with the business needs,” says spokesperson Debbie Koopman. In January the company laid off 300 call-center workers in Bothell, WA, and Hampton, VA, facilities.

In other Spiegel news, the Securities and Exchange Commission will not punish the company for its inability to file annual (Form 10-K) and quarterly (Form 10-Q) reports on a timely basis. Spiegel has until May 15 to file Form 8-K, which includes financial statements (including the notes) that would have been included in its 10-K on an unaudited basis as well as management’s discussion and analysis.
