Washington—The U.S. Postal Service on Sept. 20 filed a request with the Postal Rate Commission (PRC) seeking approval to test a no-fee trial period for its Priority Mail delivery confirmation service. Delivery confirmation, while not a tracking or tracing service, gives mailers proof that a Priority Mail parcel has been delivered; the USPS provides the shipper with the recipient’s signature, date and time of delivery, and forwarding or return information. If the PRC approves the request, the experiment would run Dec. 1-16. The confirmation fee is normally $0.40 per parcel.
“This should encourage customers to mail early during the busy holiday mailing season to take advantage of the offer,” USPS chief marketing officer Anita Bizzotto said in a statement. “By mailing as early as possible, customers can take advantage of this offer and help the USPS better manage the large parcel volumes at this time of the year.”
