Healthy fiscal year for NBTY

For its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, nutritional supplements manufacturer/marketer NBTY (Nasdaq: NBTY) reported net sales of $964 million, up 20% from last year. More impressive still, net income more than doubled, to $96 million from last year’s $42 million.

Revenue from the Bohemia, NY-based company’s Puritan’s Pride direct response/e-commerce operations increased 7% for the year, to $183 million from $172 million.

Excelligence nearly quadruples its 3Q profit Educational products cataloger/retailer Excelligence Learning Corp. (NasdaqSC: LRNS) enjoyed a whopping 293% increase in third-quarter net income. For the three months ended Sept. 30, the company netted $5.9 million, compared with $1.5 million for the third quarter of last year. The Monterey, CA-based company, which sells to schools and educators via its print catalog and to consumers via the SmarterKids.com Website, took a one-time $653,000 charge relating to the closure of its Needham, MA, facility. Consolidated revenue increased 10%, to $46.3 million from $42.2 million.
