Cataloger retail watch

Among the catalogers expanding their retail operations:

Men’s clothing marketer Jos. A. Bank Clothiers recently opened four new stores: two in September, in Lansing, MI, and Geneva, IL, and two in October, in Madison, WI, and Buffalo, NY. The Hampstead, MD-based company plans to open 25 stores in 2002 and at least 30 more stores in 2003. Established in 1905, Jos. A. Bank now operates 150 stores, a catalog, and a Website.

Fashion cataloger/retailer Nordstrom opened a store in St. Louis—its first in the city–on Sept 20. Founded in 1901 as a shoe store, Seattle-based Nordstrom has 139 stores in 27 states, including 85 full-line stores, 48 Nordstrom Racks, four Faconnable boutiques, one freestanding shoe store, and one clearance store.

Covington, KY-based faux-fur apparel marketer Fabulous-Furs on Oct. 1 opened a store in Cincinnati. The $5.2 million company includes the 13-year-old Fabulous-Furs catalog the Fabulous-Home decor products catalog, which launched in April.

Minneapolis-based furniture marketer Room & Board will open adjoining Room & Board and Retrospect stores in Orange County, CA, on Oct. 5. Room & Board sells contemporary furnishings, while Retrospect offers furniture and accessories inspired by historic designs. Both home decor brands have stores, catalogs, and Websites; Room & Board has stores in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Denver, and Retrospect has stores in Minneapolis and Chicago.

Novato, CA-based gardening products cataloger/retailer Smith & Hawken will open a store in Scottsdale, AZ, on Oct. 9 and one in Westfield, NJ, on Oct. 16. The company will open two additional retail locations in Geneva, IL, and Marlton, NJ, by the end of the year and plans to open 10 stores in 2003. Founded in 1979, Smith & Hawken now has 46 retail locations.

New York-based jewelry and tabletop items marketer Tiffany & Co. plans to open a store in Coral Gables, FL, in spring 2003. The store will occupy approximately 5,600 gross sq. ft. and will carry the company’s jewelry, watches and exclusive designs, as well as a selection of accessories, china, and crystal gifts.

Outdoor products marketer Bass Pro Shops plans to open a 102,000-sq.- ft.-Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Myrtle Beach, SC, early next summer. The Springfield, MO-based cataloger currently has 16 retail locations and one outlet. The company is also looking at future store sites Bossier City, LA; Destin, FL; and Las Vegas.
