JINGLE BELLS IN CYBERSPACE

Among consumers who are online, 42% plan to shop on the Web this holiday season. That’s according to an October survey of 1,000 consumers by Deloitte & Touche (www.dc.com) in affiliation with the National Retail Federation (www.nrf.com). Given that 54% of those surveyed said they use the Internet – including 78% of those in households with annual income of at least $75,000 – that can add up to a green Christmas. Indeed, the Internet shoppers surveyed expect to spend an average of $264 online during the holidays, or 28% of their total $957 gift budget.

Among other statistics from the survey: * 55% of Internet users had made at least one online purchase in the previous 12 months. On average they placed 12 online orders totaling $1,206 during the previous year.

* On a scale of 1 (extreme dissatisfaction) to 10 (extreme satisfaction), respondents rated their online shopping experiences an average of 8.1. Twenty-two percent of Web buyers had at least one negative online shopping experience during the past year.
