Online shopping index climbs 43% in first week of holiday shopping

New York–The number of consumers visiting e-commerce sites from home and from work during Thanksgiving week increased by 43% from the same week last year, with the number of unique visitors increasing to 50.2 million from 35.2 last year, according to a Jupiter Media Metrix report.

The report finds that traffic to online shopping sites on “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving that traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season, was up 68% over last year to 16.1 million visitors. On Saturday, Nov. 24, online traffic was up 59% to 15.3 million visitors; on Nov. 25, the number of visitors increased 55% over last year to 16.1 million. The following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, had 21.2 million, 20.2 million, and 18.9 million visitors, respectively. Thanksgiving Day saw the least amount of shopping activity with 13.7 million visitors.
