E-commerce Stumbled on Black Friday

The Keynote E-Commerce Transaction Performance Index, which surveys major online shopping Websites, shows that from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 28–aka Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving–online shoppers were able to complete transactions just 80% of the time. In other words, one in five transactions that consumers attempted to complete failed.

Overall, 89.1% of transactions conducted that day, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., were able to be completed. By comparison, on the day before Thanksgiving, 98.4% transactions were able to be completed.

The survey’s sponsor, San Mateo, CA-based Web performance measurement and management services firm Keynote Systems, concludes that Websites by and large weren’t adequately prepared to deal with the level of increased online shopping for Black Friday.
