Wine.com Buys AKA Gourmet

San Francisco-based Wine.com on Dec. 1 bought Oakland, CA-based AKA Gourmet, a cataloger/Web marketer of gourmet food and wine gift baskets. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The combined databases of Wine.com and AKA Gourmet include 650,000 catalog recipients and 450,000 e-mail addresses. AKA Gourmet founders Lisa Consani and Eric Seder will continue to run the business.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Wine.com. In late November, the wine marketer closed a $5 million equity financing and a $3 million debt financing. Wine.com was founded in 1994 and mailed its first print catalog in November 2002.

According to published reports, Wine.com is expecting its first profit in the fourth quarter and will be profitable for the year as well. Counting AKA Gourmet’s December sales, Wine.com expects 2003 revenue of $25 million and a quarterly profit of $1.5 million. Revenue for 2004 is expected to hit $40 million.
