Another Strong Quarter for Urban Outfitters

Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters, the multichannel apparel and home goods merchant whose brands include Anthropologie and Free People, posted a 32% jump in third-quarter direct sales. For the three months ended Oct. 31, catalog and Web sales were $30.9 million, compared with $23.5 million last year.

Total third-quarter sales increased 33%, to $288.8 million from $216 million. And net income grew 43%, to $37.2 million from $26.0 million last year.

“We cleared slower-selling fall merchandise during the third quarter and have accelerated receipts of winter/holiday season merchandise to take advantage of current trends in the business,” chairman/president Richard A. Hayne said in a statement. “So far during November, sales continue to run significantly above our plan, so we remain optimistic that this year’s holiday selling period will produce another record.”
