Celebrate Express to Lay Off 200 in NC

Costumes and party supplies mailer Celebrate Express will lay off more than 200 employees at its North Carolina facility next year.

The company, which was sold to Liberty Media about five months ago, notified the North Carolina Department of Commerce that it was closing its call center, administration office, distribution center and other operations in Greensboro.

The struggling cataloger said it will lay off 65 employees when it closes its call center Feb. 1. Then Celebrate Express plans to eliminate 132 positions by the end of February, and 16 more jobs by the end of May.

After holding company Liberty Media agreed to buy Celebrate Express for $31 million in July, it said that the cataloger would be folded into its Buyseasons.com unit. Liberty acquired Buyseasons.com, a costume/party Web retailer, in 2006.
