Coldwater Creek lays off 25

Women’s apparel cataloger/retailer Coldwater Creek announced in a regulatory filing on Nov. 1 that it has laid off 25 workers at its headquarters due to job consolidations. “These actions along with other improvements in our cost structure, are prudent and sensible given the uncertain business climate for the retail sector,” chairman/CEO Dennis Pence said in the Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Sandpoint, ID-based Coldwater had laid off about 20 salaried staffers at its headquarters in January, along with 80 members of its national retail store staff. Another 120 employees lost their jobs earlier this year when the company closed its Sandpoint distribution center and consolidated all fulfillment activity in its Parkersburgh, WV, facility.

Although second-quarter sales at Coldwater were flat at $92.8 million, the company posted a net loss of $700,000 for the three months ended Aug. 31. In comparison, it had reported net income of $1.3 million for the comparable quarter of last year. The company blamed the loss on the costs of its continuing retail expansion.
