Coldwater Creek posts 2Q loss

Although second-quarter sales at Coldwater Creek (Nasdaq: CWDR) were flat at $92.8 million, the women’s apparel cataloger/retailer fell into the red during the three months ended Aug. 31. Coldwater posted a net loss of $700,000 for the quarter, compared with net income of $1.3 million for the second fiscal quarter of last year. The Sandpoint, ID-based company blamed the loss on the costs of its continuing retail expansion.

Net catalog, Internet, and outlet-store sales fell 15% on a 4% decline in catalog circulation. The direct division accounted for $68.6 million in revenue, down from $80.5 million a year ago. Coldwater mailed its fall catalog later in the quarter than it had last year, however. E-commerce sales fell 2%, to $27.9 million from $28.6 million.
