Direct Sales for Staples Rise 2% in 1Q

First-quarter sales for Staples slipped 1%, to $6.1 billion, for the three months ended April 28. Direct sales from its North American Delivery Business — which includes the Staples and Quill catalogs and online businesses as well as the Staples contract delivery business — grew 2%, to $2.6 billion.

Net income sank 6%, to $187 million.

Sales rose in the North American Delivery Business segment due to double-digit sales growth in facilities and break room supplies along with strong growth in copy, print and promotional products.

Staples’ North American retail sales were flat at $2.3 billion along with same-store sales.

Total international sales decreased 8%, to $1.2 billion.
