Direct Sales Up 12% at J. Crew

New York-based apparel cataloger/retailer J. Crew had plenty of good news to report from its first quarter ended April 29. The company’s revenue for the quarter rose 14%, to $240 million, compared to $211 million for the first quarter last year. Direct sales (Internet and catalog) for the quarter increased 12%, to $66 million, compared to $59 million last year. J. Crew posted a 60% jump in first-quarter net income, to $8 million, up from $5 million from last year. Operating income increased 22%, to $28 million.
