Doctors Foster and Smith Plans Equine Line

After almost 25 years of selling pet supplies for Fido and Fluffy, Doctors Foster and Smith will begin offering supplies for Trigger in early 2007. The Rhinelander, WI-based cataloger announced plans to expand its product offering to include a comprehensive line of horse supplies and equine equipment in response to customer requests and an understanding that many of its customers own horses in addition to cats and dogs.

The horse supplies and equine equipment will be available only online at first, says Gordon Magee, Internet marketing and analysis manager. An e-mail newsletter with care tips, information from company veterinarians, and products will launch in early 2007.

Doctors Foster and Smith is discussing creating a print catalog for the products, although Magee says there are no definite plans or timeline. The company already produces catalogs specializing in supplies for domesticated birds, wild birds, fish, ponds, reptiles, and “small pets” such as gerbils in addition to titles for cat owners and dog owners.

Products in the equine line will range from joint supplements and digestive aids to grooming supplies and and training aids. Prescription equine medications will also be available at Doctors Foster and Smith’s online pharmacy.

The families of company founders Dr. Race Foster and Dr. Marty Smith are in fact avid horse lovers who own, ride, and show horses, says Magee. Their stables showcase a variety of champion Arabians, Hanoverians, and Warmbloods, boarded in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.
