Financial Reports: Design Within Reach, Talbots

Second-quarter sales at modern furniture cataloger/retailer Design Within Reach decreased 3.7%, to $47.3 million, compared to $49.1 million for the second quarter in 2007.

For the three-month period ended June 28, direct sales fell 17.5%, to $10.4 million, compared with $12.6 million last year. Net loss for the quarter was $200,000, compared to $600,000 for the same period in 2007.

Slight Rise in Direct Sales for Talbots
Second-quarter sales at Talbots slipped 7.7%, to $528 million, compared to $572 million last year. For the period ended Aug. 2, direct sales increased 2%, to $102 million, up from $100 million. Same-store sales declined 11.7% for the apparel cataloger/retailer.

Talbots CEO Trudy Sullivan said in a release: “Our second-quarter sales reflect a weak response to our Talbots and J. Jill brand end of season clearance events, which began in June.”
