3Q Direct Sales Slip at Golfsmith
Third-quarter sales for Austin, TX-based Golfsmith International Holdings rose 13.4%, to $106.5 million up from $94.0 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2006. For the period ended Sept. 29, net income jumped nearly 18%, to $4.0 million, compared with $3.4 million last year. Direct sales dropped 4.4% and same-store sales slipped 0.2%.

Lackluster Third Quarter for Talbots
Third-quarter sales at Talbots slipped 2.3%, to $556 million, compared to $569 million last year. For the period ended Nov. 3, direct sales were flat, checking in at $109 million. Same-store sales declined 7.9% for the Hingham, MA-based apparel cataloger/retailer.

3Q Sales Up 9.9% at Jos. A. Bank
Third-quarter sales for Hampstead, MD-based Jos. A. Bank Clothiers increased nearly 10%, to $131.3 million, compared to $119.5 for the same period last year. Direct sales increased 1.8% while same-store sales rose 3.1%.

Direct Sales Dip at Design Within Reach
While modern furniture cataloger/retailer Design Within Reach turned a profit for the first time in two years, direct sales for the third quarter fell 3%, to $11.8 million from $12.2 million during the same period last year. For the 13-week period ended Sept. 29, net sales increased 11.6%, to $49.0 million up from $43.9 million a year ago. Net income for the third quarter was $2.4 million, compared to a net loss of $1.2 million in the same period last year.

Bottom Line Up At Systemax
Third-quarter sales at computers manufacturer/marketer Systemax rose 20%, to $687 million, compared to $575 million in the same period last year. Sales of technology products (computers, computer supplies, and consumer electronics) increased 20% and sales of industrial products jumped 18%. Net income soared 41%, to $17.6 million, up from $12.5 million.
