More Job Cuts at Office Depot

Two weeks after announcing that it would cut up to 800 call center jobs during the next year, Office Depot announced another wave of layoffs. In addition to reducing its North American retail workforce by 2%, or 550 jobs, the cataloger/retailer plans to lay off 97 employees at its headquarters in Delray Beach, FL.

The parent company of cataloger Viking Office Products will also lay off 45 of its European contract sales force and 10 workers at its 4sure.com subsidiary in Trumball, CT. In addition, the company is outsourcing the jobs of 93 financial staffers in Wichita, KS, but those workers will be offered positions with the third-party provider.

In a statement, acting chairman/CEO Neil Austrian said that “a focus on fewer programs requires fewer people.” Office Depot expects to save $14.2 million as a result of the cutbacks.
