The warehousing market is showing strong signs of recovery, and although companies are still watching their budgets, they’re no longer afraid to invest in distribution operations — if there’s a major payoff.

This year, that payoff could very well come from an overhaul of transport functions, suggests a report from the research firm AberdeenGroup. Titled “Best Practices in Transportation Management,” the study, based on a survey of 286 midsize and large U.S.-based companies, is a goldmine of data, checklists, advice, and case studies. “Traditionally, the transportation function has been the last step in a sequential, waterfall fulfillment process, responsible for consolidating and shipping out the orders the warehouse packs,” writes report author Beth Enslow. “By comparison, in best-practice companies, the transportation department plays a central role in synchronizing activities and data across the key stakeholders in the supply chain.” Some best practices are fairly common, but the leaders in transport innovation are experimenting with, among other things, three processes that AberdeenGroup hails as noteworthy:

Carrier collaboration programs

Don’t try to extract as much as possible from your carrier; instead, become a lower-cost customer, and in return, you will receive favorable rates and services. Collaborative tactics include sharing two- to three-week capacity forecasts with carriers; tendering earlier; reducing driver turnaround time at pickup and delivery locations; increasing your hours of operation to provide more scheduling flexibility; and paying carriers faster.

Universal information access

Invest in a browser-based transportation management system that your trading partners can use. Shared information should include freight costs, service options, routing guides, shipment status, and performance objectives.

360-degree scorecards

Frequent tracking is tedious, but it’s the one thing that truly sets apart the excellent from the average. Aberdeen’s best-practice leaders meticulously score carriers weekly or even daily on a host of measures; in turn, the carriers rate their clients on yardsticks such as preparation of shipments for delivery, accuracy of count, quality of documentation, and payment dependability. And it doesn’t all get thrown into a file and forgotten — the leading companies in the survey devise plans for action based on the scorecards.
