Neiman Marcus suspends unprofitable catalogs

The Neiman Marcus Group, which mails the Chef’s Catalog, Horchow, and Neiman Marcus catalogs, has temporarily suspended its Neiman Marcus Kids and Neiman Marcus Beauty catalogs. The company did not mail them in the first quarter. What’s more, Neiman Marcus mailed one home furnishings book during the quarter, whereas it had mailed two editions during the first quarter of last year.

“The books didn’t meet our profitability requirements,” says company spokesperson Stacie Shirley. She adds that Neiman Marcus might consider producing the Kids and Beauty books in the future.

For the five weeks ended March 30, sales at Neiman Marcus Direct were down 7% from the same period of last year. “We’ve decreased our circulation fairly significantly,” Shirley says, “but that’s not a number we’ve released. And though we’ve cut our circulation, our sales didn’t drop that much, so we’re mailing more profitably.”
