Non-store Retail Sales Increase 1.4% in April

Non-store retailers’ sales increased 1.4% seasonally-adjusted month-to-month and increased 19.0% unadjusted year-over-year.  At the same time, retail sales rebounded in April and increased 0.6% and increased 3.9% unadjusted year-over-year., according to a press release by the National Retail Federation.  

According to the press release, strengthened employment data, increased housing prices and a record-breaking stock market providing consumers the confidence needed to shop in April.

 Retail sales, released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on May 13 showed total retail and food services sales which include non-general merchandise categories such as automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants, increased 0.1% seasonally adjusted month-to-month and increased 3.7% adjusted year-over-year. 

Clothing and clothing accessories stores’ sales increased 0.8% seasonally-adjusted month-to-month and increased 1.2% year-over-year.  General merchandise stores’ sales increased 1.0 seasonally-adjusted month-to-month and decreased 2.7% unadjusted year-over-year.
