Spiegel to Shut Two Facilities, Lay Off 680 Workers

Downers Grove, IL-based Spiegel, which operates the Spiegel and Newport News catalogs and the Eddie Bauer catalogs and stores, said on July 24 that it plans to close two facilities and relocate one. All told, 680 employees will be laid off.

The company plans to close a customer teleservice center in Rapid City, SD, which employs 240, and a distribution center in Newport News, VA, which will eliminate 400 jobs. In addition, Spiegel plans to relocate a retail distribution facility in Columbus, OH, to Groveport, OH, which will cut another 40 jobs. Spiegel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March.
