General merchant Target Corp. Friday announced it has acquired the Smith & Hawken brand and other intellectual property from Smith & Hawken, LTD, a subsidiary of The Scotts Co. The deal was effective Dec. 30.
Target and Smith & Hawken are no strangers: The retail giant had been selling Smith & Hawken for Target, a line affordable outdoor furniture, gardening and decor items, since 2006.
“We’re thrilled to own such an admired and iconic brand,” said Kathee Tesija, executive vice president of merchandising for Target, in a statement. “We believe the Smith & Hawken brand complements our existing portfolio of owned brands and provides our guests with another compelling reason to shop Target.”
The Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. had acquired Smith & Hawken in 2004, but the recession kicked in, the high-end cataloger/retailer was not a fit with Scotts’ core lawn and garden products business. Scotts tried to sell the division but with no luck: It announced this past July it was closing Smith & Hawken’s 56 stores, catalog and Website.
