The “Thong Song” by pop singer Sisqo may have been the song of summer 2000, but according to Frederick’s of Hollywood, 2001 is the thong’s big year — it’s the 20th anniversary of Frederick’s introduction of the scanty panty to the U.S. Though many Americans were shocked by the thong at first, it’s become a key weapon in the war against the dreaded visible panty lines. Frederick’s says thongs represented only 5% of overall panty sales nationally in 1981; today, they account for 90%, with the 55-year-old lingerie cataloger/retailer selling more than 750,000 a week! To commemorate the occasion, Frederick’s has designed a one-of-a-kind thong. But if you’re curious to see the anniversary thong — and we are, since what’s left to redesign in a G-string? — don’t look for it in the catalog. The celebrated scrap of fabric will be available only in Frederick’s stores.
