Is Amazon getting geared up to grapple with grocers? During its first-quarter earnings call, the ecommerce behemoth said it is seeing early success with a new “essentials” delivery service for its Prime members.
Available nationally, Prime customers can use Prime Pantry to buy as much or as little as they want and have items conveniently delivered to their home. There’s a flat $5.99 delivery fee per Prime Pantry box, and the boxes can hold up to 45 lbs.
Selection includes popular soft drinks and bottled water, a new range of paper and laundry products in popular pack sizes, single boxes of breakfast cereal, potato chips, convenience-sized personal care products and more.
“We just think it’s an exciting option for prime numbers that’s available only to prime numbers, and so they can get their everyday non-bulk items in one box,” Amazon senior vice president and CFO Thomas J. Szkutak said during the earnings call. “Its’ interesting for customers and it’s great way that we can add the selection and have the selections for those customers.”
Amazon also introduced Dash during the first quarter. Dash works directly with a customer’s AmazonFresh account without the need to browse the AmazonFresh website or app – customers simply scan a product they want, or use a voice search, to find shop.
