Promotional Packaging Specialist Supremia Adds Eco-Friendly Initiative

Lawrenceville, NJ – Supremia International, a leading premiums and promotional packaging specialist, has furthered its commitment to sustainability with the retainment of TerraCycle, a world leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams. Recently, Supremia International hired TerracCycle to collect and repurpose pallets of cotton bags for which it no longer had use.

Supremia initiated the process by seeking to avoid either burning or landfilling pallets of cotton bags it had accumulated over several years. These bags were samples that had been manufactured for trial and, because they were ‘branded,’ could not simply be donated. TerraCycle aggregated the bags with other like goods and converted them into low-end yarn, called “shoddy.” Shoddy is sold in bulk to companies who use it in a variety of ways, including as insulation or padded products, typically in furniture or exercise equipment.

“Working with TerraCycle has been extremely satisfying, as it has allowed Supremia International to honor our commitment to sustainability while enabling us to unload excess product,” said Suzanne Deemer, Vice President of Operations for Supremia Americas. “We were thrilled that TerraCycle was able to recycle three pallets of bags — turning 29,500 bags into 1,475 pounds of material — and enable Supremia International to take another step forward in achieving eco-friendly solutions to waste concerns.”

TerraCycle is dedicated to eliminating the idea of waste by recycling products often deemed non-recyclable. From coffee capsules and pens in the home or office to plastic gloves at a manufacturing facility, TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste, and diverts millions of pounds of refuse from landfills and incinerators each month. The organization partners with individual collectors as well as major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, and small businesses across 20 different countries.

“We are always thrilled when companies like Supremia take the initiative to recycle their waste that would otherwise end up being landfilled or incinerated,” said Brett Stevens, Global VP of Material Sales & Procurement for TerraCycle. “While this is typically more expensive than traditional disposal methods, it sends a message that Supremia wants to do the right thing and reduce our society’s dependency on virgin resources for new products. We’re happy to be working with them.”
