Doctors Foster and Smith On Target With Retail Distribution

Pet supplies cataloger Doctors Foster and Smith is rolling into the retail channel in a big way: The company will begin selling its products in nearly 900 Target stores nationwide next week.

Select Target stores will start offering the cataloger’s dry and canned dog foods, some dog beds, and certain furniture throws on July 15. “Target was interested in our products and approached us about that,” says Gordon Magee, Internet marketing and analysis manager for Doctors Foster and Smith.

At the same time, the Rhinelander, WI-based cataloger had been looking for a retail partner to share its vision on veterinarian-recommended and formulated products. “We think it’s a good fit with Target,” Magee says. “We’ve been working on this a number of months.”

Doctors Foster and Smith specializes in veterinarian-recommended and formulated products, including food, nutritional supplements, training aids, pet care and grooming goods. With 898 of Target’s 1,500 stores nationwide stocked with selected items from Doctors Foster and Smith, Magee says if all goes well even more of those stores could enter into the arrangement.

Is the Target deal a start for further retail expansion for the cataloger? “We’re working on some things,” Magee says. “People should look for more down the line, but we can’t be more specific at this point.”
