Due to a decline in catalog sales stemming from the shift to online shopping, J.C. Penny is shuttering its catalog call center in Carmichael, CA. The closing will result in layoffs for about 260 workers.
The call center is one of six J.C. Penney operates across the country. The other five facilities will remain open.
The general merchant says it will close the call center on or before March 20. Employees were informed of the decision on Jan. 7.
It was about a year ago that Plano, TX-based J.C. Penney closed its catalog call center in Scranton, PA, citing similar reasons. That closing resulted in 275 layoffs.
