Philadelphia–Retailer Urban Outfitters (Nasdaq: URBN) which mails the Anthropologie catalog, posted double the net income compared with last year, thanks in part to the Anthropologie book. For the quarter ended July 31, net income increased 98%, to $6.3 million, compared with $3.2 million last year. Net sales for the quarter increased 26%, to $101.0 million, from $80.4 million last year. Direct-to-customer sales, which includes catalogs and the Web, shot up 38%, to $6.7 million compared with $4.2 million in sales last year. Further good news: Selling, general and administrative expenses at Urban Outfitters decreased due to improved efficiencies in the direct operations.
