Going Global? Reduce Your Risks and Maximize Your Success

Brian G. Bishop, division director of logistics and fulfillment for the National Fire Protection Association, offers these tips for those doing business globally.

“Use your order management system to identify problem areas by country code (Nigeria, Benin, etc.) and have those orders held for review before they are released,” he says. “Our experience has been that most fraud orders request expedited shipping, so they process before the stolen credit card or bank check has been reported. Holding the order will give a customer service rep time to contact the issuing bank and verify the address.”

Bishop adds: “In the event that the order does release and ship, it’s not necessarily lost. As a UPS shipper, we use its Package Intercept software to stop the shipment at its next delivery point and hold for release or return, provided it hasn’t been turned over to a third-party carrier. There’s some expense involved (return delivery charges), but that’s normally less than the value of the shipment.”

If you want to know more, Brian will be speaking on this topic at the Operations Summit in Memphis on May 2-3. For more information, go to www.operationssummit.com.
