"Solving for Oversized Fulfillment in Ecommerce"

Oversized fulfillment for ecommerce remains a black hole for many. Pickup/delivery schedules, assembly and costs all friction factors. How do you find more efficiency by reducing costs and what are the customer expectations? Retail executives discuss the issue in our inaugural Think Tank Forum, “Solving for Oversized Fulfillment.”

Even before the pandemic set in last year, there was a significant increase in online sales of oversize goods, as customers grew more comfortable doing so. Now the U.S. Census Bureau reports ecommerce sales of furniture/home furnishings increased 49% in Q1 2021, while building materials/garden equipment was up a whopping 63.1%.

However, the logistics of oversized fulfillment presents a unique set of challenges. Shipping a 250-lb. couch cross country is not the same as a sweater or book. Pickup and delivery schedules, insurance, assembly and transportation costs are all friction factors. How do you find more efficient ways to handle bulky orders, and what are the customer expectations?

To address this issue, we recently invited a panel of retail/ecommerce operations executives to an exclusive virtual Think Tank Forum, “Solving for Oversized Ecommerce Fulfillment,” sponsored by Purolator. Representatives from Balsam Brands, Fruit of the Loom, Hudson's Bay Co., Joybird and Purolator took part in a lively discussion of the challenges, opportunities and solutions for large-item logistics.

Topics covered included:

  • Rising consumer demand
  • Managing expectations
  • Carrier costs and strategies
  • The returns process
