Remembering Daryl Logullo

daryl-logullo-smallWhen I think of Daryl Logullo, I think of Duck Dynasty. The name Daryl Logullo also makes me crave juicy, navel oranges, even though I’m not a big fan of citrus fruits (unless they are squeezed and in a glass). And when I think of Daryl Logullo, I also think of former Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays second baseman, Will Rhymes, who Daryl told me during a break at IRCE 2012 was his cousin.

But today, I’m thinking with a heavy heart about Daryl Logullo, husband to Beth, and father to Matthew and Katherine, who died suddenly on Nov. 18. I received the sad news today in an email from David Auerbach, president of Kellyco Metal Detectors, where Daryl had been Director of Ecommerce and Marketing since March.

As I was reading the email, I was also formatting Daryl’s profile for a new series we’re debuting at Multichannel Merchant, “Follow the Leaders.” We decided it must run posthumously.

I’d only known Daryl since February 2012, when I met him at IRWD 2012. At the time, he was ecommerce manager for Southern Fulfillment and Hale Groves. He spoke at the conference, and made the audience pucker with a product video for oranges.

Daryl and I instantly hit it off. He became a regular contact, he volunteered as a MCM Awards judge, and he became a regular contributor.

Just as important, he became a friend of all of us at Multichannel Merchant. In an industry where we meet a lot of people at conferences, Daryl often scheduled meetings with me and other members of our editorial team just to catch up and find out how we were doing; like we’d known each other for 21 years, not 21 months.

But there were things we didn’t know about Daryl, and fortunately, this information is on his Wikipedia page. We didn’t know the pain he experienced by losing a child, and how that led to he and his wife helping to write, lobby and successfully pass the Florida MISSing Angels Bill, which was renamed “Katherine’s Law” in honor of their daughter. We also didn’t know he was the National Legislative Liason for the MISS Foundation.

Most recently, Daryl had agreed to present a session called “Taming Your Service Frankenstein, Getting Your Online and Call Center to Work Together to Build Love” at Operations Summit 2014, and was excited about the licensing deal he helped secure with Kellyco for a line of Duck Dynasty-branded metal detectors.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Daryl’s family, his co-workers, and everyone whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

Update, Nov. 20, 10:30 a.m.: Celebration of Life Services for Daryl Logullo will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at 11a.m. at University Carillon United Methodist Church, 1395 Campus View Court, Oviedo, FL 32765.
