3 Slices of Pi Day Emails

Tim Parry
March 15, 2015

My Pi Day inbox made me sigh, and it made me cry. I only received three Pi Day offers from retailers on March 14, 2015 (the biggest Pi Day celebration of the century). Make that 3.14159265359 emails if you throw in the one I got from Uno Pizzeria & Grill.

To me, it felt like retailers didn’t want to offer 31.41%, or $31.41, off an order. Or that the retailers whose email marketing messages I subscribe to were saving it up for St. Patrick’s Day.

Or maybe, just maybe, these 3.14159265359 retailers looked at my customer profile, and the “nerd alert” alarm went off. Maybe they knew I could have been a contestant on “Geek, Dweeb, or Spaz?” Or maybe my penchant for buying Big Bang Theory USB memory sticks from RadioShack made me a dead giveaway (and no, RadioShack was not one of the merchants who sent me a Pi Day email).

Here’s who was willing to talk nerdy to me:

Uniqlo

Uniqlo

The Japanese casual wear designer, manufacturer and retailer played it safe with its $31.41 off $200 deal. That equates to a 15.705% savings, if my math is correct. Not a huge offer, but it looks big in email format. But here's what stands out most: It's an ecommerce offer, and Uniqlo usually uses email to drive in-store traffic.

Nothing quite screams "talk nerdy to me" like a bow tie. This 31.4% offer is off its brand new line of "Science Ties." Scientists need math. So this nerdy offer is so cool that it's ice cold.

Cafe Press

Cafe Press always does cool stuff, so this doesn't really surprise me. And they have been promoting Pi Day products for sale all along. So a 31.4% off Pi Day promotion didn't surprise me. This gave its customers a great opportunity to get geared up at the last second for St. Patrick's Day and not worry about paying for express shipping!
