Every now and then, you need to get away from the office and recharge the batteries. So from 3 p.m. today until September 2, I will be out of the office.

Now, I’ll answer the “Two weeks? That’s a lot of time off! What are you going to be doing?” question. Well, the answer, as you’ll see, is “not much resting!”
Let’s start with a trip to Pennsylvania, Amish Country, to be precise. My wife, Ursula, found a motel in Ronks called the Red Caboose, and all the rooms are all old rail cars. And she figured our soon-to-be-4-year-old son, William, would get a kick out of that. And the way I see it, since he’s not a fan of rides and amusement parks prices are out of control, it’ll be an exciting place for William to be.
We’re only staying for 2 nights, then we will hit the Crayola Experience in Easton, PA, on the way home. And after we get home, we will take a trip to the Connecticut Science Center to see the Mr. Potato Head experience… William is a bit of a Mr. Potato Head fan…
There will be even more fun and excitement when we get back to Connecticut. My sisters-in-law, Heidi and Kathy, are getting married on the 24th, and William is the ring bearer (complete with a Mr. Potato Head pillow for the rings!). And on the 28th William starts Pre-K. While I’m nervous about the logistics (what line do I get in to pick him up from school, etc.), William is familiar with his surroundings, thanks to his attendance at the school’s summer day camp.
And then there’s the reality I have to face at home as well. My 85-year-old father has been in a nursing home for about 6 weeks now, with a variety of ailments. It’s not too far from my house, and I’ve done my best to make time to visit him every day. But no time seems to be enough time when you know your father does not a lot of time left. So at least I know I will have more time to visit.
