The Dump Trump petition, created by Angelo Carusone on the social activist website SignOn.org, is urging Macy’s to remove Trump because he does not reflect the “magic of Macy’s.”
Macy’s sells the real estate developer’s dress shirts, ties and accessories both online and in store.
The petition claims that Trump “engages in especially unpleasant, nasty and despicable behavior” including sexism, disparaging remarks about President Barack Obama and his citizenship, and a hypocritical stance on jobs moving overseas when a majority of his brand is made in China and other Asian countries.
The petition also claims that Trump used his public personae “to deny the reality of climate change” after he declared that Superstorm Sandy “was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive” and not a reflection of climate change.
But Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren is standing behind the billionaire.
According to BuzzFeed, Lundgren got wind of the petition and send Carusone an email. In that email, which BuzzFeed posted online, Lundgren states that many of the businesses or individuals associated with Macy’s “express personal opinions that are not related to the merchandise we sell or to the philosophies of our company. That is the nature of a free society.”
