Two More Acquisitions for Sport Supply Group

Sport Supply Group has picked up two more. The sports equipment merchant acquired substantially all of the assets of Coaches Sports Corner, a regional team sports distributor based in Sandusky, OH, and certain assets of Greg Larson Sports, a national cataloger and regional team sports distributor based in Brainerd, MN.

Sport Supply Group chairman/CEO Adam Blumenfeld said in a release that the two transactions will complement the company’s existing road sales efforts in northern Ohio and will “give SSG a physical road presence in the new territories of Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota.” Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Formerly Collegiate Pacific, Sport Supply Group manufactures and distributes sporting goods and branded team uniforms to the institutional and team sports market. The company, which last month acquired by an affiliate of ONCAP Management Partners, the mid-market private equity business of Onex Corp, sells via catalogs, a telesales, 200 direct sales professionals, and a family of Websites.

Sport Supply Group has been beefing up its roster in recent years. The company in 2004 acquired Orlando Team Sports, Dixie Sporting Goods and Kessler’s Sports; in 2005 it purchased Salkeld Sports; and last year it bought Har-bell Athletics, Gus Doerner’s team sports division and Webster’s Team Sports.

Chris Kampe, managing director with investment firm Tully & Holland, says Sport Supply’s acquisition targets “represent relatively small add-on or bolt-on acquisitions of primarily local and regional sporting goods distributors. The merchant’s rationale is growth through acquisition, he notes, “to expand its geographic footprint or gain additional share of existing markets.”
