Baltimore-based upscale food cataloger Mackenzie Ltd. is merging its mail order business with that of Belfast, ME-based smokehouse Ducktrap River Fish Farm. Though financial terms were not disclosed, MacKenzie purchased inventory from Ducktrap.
The merger provides $1.5 million Mackenzie, which imports smoked salmon directly from Scotland, the opportunity to sell domestic salmon from Ducktrap River. Ducktrap River will no longer mail its 24-page catalog; instead it will concentrate on its core business as a wholesaler to high-end restaurants.
Launched in 1984, Mackenzie mails 500,000 copies of its 36-page catalog in eight drops a year. The average order value is $120, says president Laura McManus, who purchased the company from the Mackenzie family in 1996.Mackenzie will add eight pages of Ducktrap River products to its catalog beginning in September.
