Amazon and eBay Offering Same-Day Delivery

As we reported last month, same-day delivery appears to be the next step for ecommerce giant According to published reports, Amazon is now offering a same-day delivery service, as is ecommerce rival eBay.

According to Business Insider, Amazon is offering Amazon Prime members “Local Express Delivery” in 10 U.S. markets.

Customers are charged $3.99 for delivery of gift cards. All other items are delivered for an $8.99 fee, plus 99 cents per item. The service does not deliver to post offices, APOs, FPOs or DPOs, and items are shipped as late as 8 p.m., according to’s website.

Cut-off times for the same-day delivery service is as early as 7 a.m. in Chicago and Indianapolis, and as late as noon in Seattle, according to the site.

According to Amazon, item eligibility is indicated on the product detail page and during checkout. If the order is placed after the deadline, the order will be delivered the next business day. If this shipping option doesn’t appear, the order isn’t eligible.

Meanwhile, eBay is testing a new service called “eBay Now” in the San Francisco market.

Venture Beat reports that eBay Now “weaves together eBay’s acquisition of and its launch of PayPal Here in a way that makes ordering a hard drive much easier than ordering a pizza.”

eBay has partnered with merchants such as Nordstrom, Best Buy, Target, Macy’s and Bloomingdales, according to Venture Beat. eBay Now users must make a minimum purchase of $25, and can only shop via an iOS app.

The eBay Now shipping fee is $5, and eBay is offering new users a $15 delivery voucher, so a user’s first three orders will be delivered for free.
