Sales Drop at Bombay

First-quarter sales for decor cataloger/retailer The Bombay Co. decreased 12%, to $104.6 million for the 13 weeks ended May 5. Same-store sales fell 10%, while overall retail revenue slipped 11%, to $95.6 million. The company’s net loss was $15.4 million, slightly less than last year’s first-quarter loss of $15.6 million.

But there was some good news for the Fort Worth, TX-based company: Direct sales jumped 29%, to $8.5 million from $6.6 million a year ago, due to an increase in Internet sales.
