Office Depot Sales Slip 19%

First-quarter sales for Office Depot decreased 19%, to $3.2 billion for the period ended March 28. The office supplies merchant reported a net loss of $55 million, compared to net income of $69 million for the same period in 2008.

Solid first quarter for Amazon.com

First-quarter sales for online giant Amazon.com rose 18%, to $4.89 billion, up from $41.3 billion in the first quarter of 2008. Net income increased 24%, to $177 million, up from $143 million last year.

RILA and NRF Merging

The National Retail Federation (NRF) and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) are becoming one. The executive committees of both associations announced April 21 that they have agreed to a merger that will create a single trade association representing retail interests in Washington.

Direct Sales Up 9% at Coach

Third-quarter sales for luxury leather goods cataloger/retailer Coach slipped 1%, to $740 million, down from $745 million for the same period last year. For the period ended March 28, net income declined 24%, to $123 million, from $162 million.
