J. Crew Improves Operating Results; Direct Sales Pick Up

New York-based apparel cataloger/retailer J. Crew improved its operating income to a gain of $8 million for the second quarter ended July 31, compared with an operating loss of $15 million last year. Its net loss for the quarter totaled $14 million, compared to a loss of $28 million last year.

Broder Bros. Acquires NES Clothing

Philadelphia-based imprintable sportswear cataloger Broder Bros. announced on Aug. 31 that it has acquired NES Clothing Co., a Middleboro, MA-based regional distributor of imprintable sportswear. Boston-based private equity firm Bain Capital, which owns the majority stake in Broder Bros., orchestrated the deal to buy the privately owned NES.
