Circuit City (2008)
THE REASON: Basically, according to 24/7 Wall St., Best Buy and Walmart brought too much marketing muscle and wholesale buying power to the industry. 24/7 Wall St. predicted Best Buy would be the most logical buyer by keeping the locations that did well and closing the rest. Virtually all the merchandising, management, and public company costs would go away as would the Circuit City brand.
TODAY: Circuit City is a distant memory, having shut its doors in 2009, following a bankruptcy and a failure to find a new buyer. Although a new buyer DID emerge after liquidation – Systemax acquired the Circuit City name and ran it as a branded site alongside its TigerDirect and CompUSA brands. Circuit City was rolled into TigerDirect after the 2012 holiday season.
