Propelled by solid sales in clothing and electronics stores, growth in retail sales in September offered a promising outlook for the critical holiday months ahead.
Mall-based shoe company Bakers Footwear announced that has filed for bankruptcy protection this week due, in large part, to declining sales. The retailer had, in August, anticipated a major restructuring and cut about one-third of its workforce.
Although it was a bit of a mixed bag for retailers after September sales figures were released today, analysts maintain the overall sales growth in September is an encouraging sign as the holiday season beckons.
Despite political and fiscal uncertainties, the National Retail Federation predicts holiday sales this year will rise 4.1%, to $586.1 billion.
Retailers are expected to hire between 585,000 and 625,000 seasonal workers during the 2012 holiday season, according to projections compiled by the National Retail Federation. That is comparable to the 607,500 seasonal employees retailers hired last year, NRF said in a statement.
Although publicly the ecommerce company is keeping mum, it looks as though Amazon.com will soon offer loans to some of its Amazon sellers.
