Multititle home goods merchant Williams-Sonoma reportedly got socked with a copyright infringement lawsuit on Wednesday. Designer Madeline Weinrib says the retailer is selling carpets that are “virtually indistinguishable” from rugs featuring her copyrighted designs.
Filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the suit also names as Williams-Sonoma brands Pottery Barn and West Elm as defendants. Weinrib claims the Moorish Tile Rug and Taksimi Tile Rug sold in Williams-Sonoma’s catalogs and Websites are copies of two of her copyrighted Brooke Carpet Design rugs.
Weinrib has asked the court to stop Williams-Sonoma from selling and promoting the carpets. She is also seeking damages to be determined at trial, plus all profits, gains and advantages derived by the alleged copyright infringement.
