America’s Shopping Mall Morphs into Catalog Group

America’s Shopping Mall, which mailed home products book Joan Cook, women’s athletic apparel title The Female Athlete, office supplies catalog Remarkable Products, and leather goods catalog Deerskin Trading Co., is no more. Catalog Age has learned that the Upper Saddle River, NJ-based company, which expected $16 million in sales in 2001, ceased operations in the fall. Irwin Schneidmill, who founded the company in 1999, reportedly ran into problems with financing.

Deerskin Trading and Joan Cook were liquidated in October by America’s Shopping Mall lender Gerber Trade Finance. (The former catalog was founded in 1944; the latter in 1956.) But The Female Athlete and Remarkable Products will return. In October, Schneidmill bought the two titles back from the bank and made them part of his new company, West Nyack, NY-based The Catalog Group. America’s Shopping Mall had bought The Female Athlete in February 2001, a month after the cataloger filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
