On the scene at MTAC: Potter says mailers will be ‘pleasantly surprised’ at new plan

Postmaster General Jack Potter on Feb. 7 said he’s pinning his hopes on the final draft of the U.S. Postal Service’s transformation plan, which broadly outlines the future goals of the USPS. In a brief presentation during the Mailers Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) meetings in Washington, Potter acknowledged that the agency’s initial outline was poorly received by mailers. “The whole thing with our ‘discussion draft’ was to get people to discuss tranformation,” Potter said, “and we definitely stirred up a discussion.”

Potter predicted that mailers would be “pleasantly surprised” at the final draft of the plan. “We’re trying to create an overall plan of the Postal Service and where we’re going in the future,” he said. Once the USPS releases its comprehensive transformation plan to Congress and the General Accounting Office on March 31, “you’ll see a very clear plan of where we think we want to go. Then mailers will have plenty of opportunity to jump on it with comments—a healthy part of the process,” Potter said. “For now, have patience with us while we make sure we have internal consensus on a lot of issues.”
