Short Takes: Logically Speaking

You may be fed up with dot-com doublespeak, but don’t write off e-logistics just yet. It may be one of the few aspects of Internet commerce with genuine potential to transform the supply chain, say the authors of e-Business: The Strategic Impact on Supply Chain and Logistics, published this year by the Council of Logistics Management.

Written by analysts at CSC Consulting and AMR Research, the book provides techniques that a traditional business can use to obtain the infrastructure, applications, and maintenance services needed to support a logistics system enhanced by e-commerce. The authors cite numerous examples of companies that have achieved remarkable operating efficiencies because of their move to the Internet. For instance, mutual fund management firm Janus cut its call center staff by 465 people as customers began accessing account information through the company’s Web site.
