Outdoor retailer giant and sustainability market leader REI announced plans to open a new circular Re/Supply location in Clackamas, Oregon in late August 2023. The new store follows REI’s Re/Supply store in Manhattan Beach, California, which opened in 2020.

The new 16,113-square-foot store location will open in the Clackamas Town Center and feature lightly used gear and apparel that REI receives through its returns and trade-in programs.

“As a member-owned co-op, we have a responsibility to preserve the long-term health of the planet,” said Bob Cagle, REI regional director. “Our Re/Supply offering reimagines the lifecycle of outdoor products and helps keep gear where it belongs—out on trails, waterways, and other natural places. Opening a Re/Supply store in the community builds on the popularity of our used program that is enjoyed by many Oregonians.”

REI has led retailers in implementing sustainability initiatives that resonate with their customers’ values.  Re/Supply membership is a perk for existing REI co-op members.  Lifetime membership to the co-op is available for a one-time fee of $30.

REI was the top vote-getter in a new circular fashion study from Trove and OSF this past March. The study noted “REI has since integrated the program into its co-op membership program as a core benefit and is a leader in omnichannel commerce and trade-in.”

In a recent press release, the retailer estimated that buying used goods through the Re/Supply channel reduces carbon emissions by 50% versus making new gear.  REI expects to hire 25 new employees for the Clackamas location.

Active and outdoor apparel retailer Patagonia continues to keep pace with REI’s sustainability and circular fashion initiatives receiving top marks in consulting firm Kearney’s Circular Fashion Index. A Kearney analyst said Patagonia scored high because it thinks about circularity as it designs its products. The retailer launched its own Worn Wear brand in 2017.
