A U.S. Appellate Court ruling in Washington DC upheld the U.S. Postal Service’s pricing methodology, knocking down a challenge from UPS that categorized it as unfair and anticompetitive.
The USPS has put on hold planned pricing increases in parcel services until all pricing requests across products were approved by the PRC.
As it continues to battle UPS, FedEx and DHL for a larger slice of the ecommerce shipping pie, the USPS has asked the PRC to keep its competitive Priority Mail rates unchanged for domestic delivery while raising Parcel Select – the primary last-mile option of the major carriers – by 8%.
“We have a very structured plan around all we’re trying to do to grow our package business,” said Cliff Rucker, vice president of sales for the USPS. “When you think about it, over one-third of our volume is gone since 2006 on the letter side, so that’s why we see packaging as a growth area.”
