The D.E. Shaw Group, which in July bought toys cataloger/retailer FAO Schwarz out of bankruptcy, on Aug. 11 bought the assets of another bankrupt cataloger: Sure Fit, a manufacturer/marketer of furniture slipcovers.

Marysville, OH-based lawn care manufacturer Scotts has purchased Novato, CA-based upscale garden products cataloger/retailer Smith & Hawken for $72 million from private equity firm DDJ Capital Management. Additionally, the $1.9 billion Scotts will assume $14 million in debt. The deal is expected to close Oct. 1.

FedEx to Acquire Consolidator Parcel Direct

In a deal that will give Federal Express 80 more catalog parcel shipping customers and the opportunity to one-up rival United Parcel Service in the residential ground delivery market, FedEx on Aug. 9 agreed to acquire small package consolidator Parcel Direct from its parent firm, printer Quad/Graphics.
